Tips for Efficient Fires
If you're noticing smoke blowing into the room rather than up the chimney, it might be time for a cleaning.
If the backdraft is happening only when you start your fire, try this trick which will warm up the flue before starting a fire and help pull the smoke up. Roll a piece of newspaper into a cone shape and light the top like a torch. Hold the lit end up into the throat of the flue, or up near the baffle of a wood stove for a few moments. This will force the "cold air plug" up and out of the chimney, and allow the smoke of the fire to draw up the flue rather than out into the room. Now start your fire!
Why Get a Chimney Inspection?
How do you know if your chimney is safe? You don’t! What’s inside your chimney flue may be putting your home and your life in danger. Cracks and gaps in a chimney, caused by past chimney fires, precipitation, or even the settling of the foundation of a home, can compromise its ability to contain heat and gasses. With a Level II camera inspection, we scan the entirety of your flue and photograph any damage. We issue a safety report as well as an estimate for needed repairs.
