If you're noticing smoke blowing into the room rather than up the chimney, it might be time for a cleaning.
If the backdraft is happening only when you start your fire, try this trick which will warm up the flue before starting a fire and help pull the smoke up. Roll a piece of newspaper into a cone shape and light the top like a torch. Hold the lit end up into the throat of the flue, or up near the baffle of a wood stove for a few moments. This will force the "cold air plug" up and out of the chimney, and allow the smoke of the fire to draw up the flue rather than out into the room. Now start your fire!
